Dental Basics

Most everyone knows that dentists look at and clean teeth. Typically, the average person is supposed to visit the dentist at least twice every year for routine check-ups and cleanings. However, a dentist also holds the title "Doctor" and has a much more important job than just "looking at and cleaning teeth." Dentists have a very important job as far as our general health is concerned, as the health of our teeth is directly linked to the health of the rest of our body. Obviously, dentists do look at teeth, but they also treat and correct problems with teeth and gums as well. They provide the public with advice and care for their teeth, as well as their jaw, and their oral cavity, or mouth. Our overall health is dependent upon good dental practices.

Dentists do not work alone, however, although they are often referred to as solo practitioners. Generally, they work with a team of people to create a successful dental practice. Some of the people that may work with a dentist are dental hygienists, dental assistants, dental therapists, and dental technicians. Dental hygienists often perform the actual cleaning of the teeth. Dental assistants aide the dentist by helping and cleaning supplies needed for dental work. Dental therapists typically work with children under the supervision of an actual dentist. Dental technicians help create the items and tools necessary for the dentist to fix teeth.

Most dentists usually have patients of all ages, from children to the elderly. Advanced equipment is often used in dentistry, including x-rays. Besides just teaching the public about dental hygiene and cleaning teeth, there are even aspects of dentistry in which surgery is performed. In fact there are nine different dental specialties in addition to general dentistry.
